It is difficult to talk about roses without using superlatives, for most of them are magnificent and selecting only a few to highlight is equally as difficult as they each have their stunning attributes.
‘Wild Blue Yonder’ is a gorgeous lavender double rose with large wavy petals. This award winning grandiflora
exudes a sweet citrus and rose fragrance. A vigorous grower, it forms a 4-6 foot shrubby bush with abundant deep green leaves and 3” flowers. The extraordinarily novel color is a mixture of lavenders and purple and blooms in flushes throughout the Season. It is very fragrant and resistant to mildew and rust.
The heavenly floribunda ‘White Licorice’ is a lemon-chiffon to ivory white rose with a strong lemon licorice fragrance. These exquisite 4-5” blooms form continuously throughout the season. The large double classically formed flower will be more yellow when the temperature is cooler or turn to white when the air is warmer. It can be grown in full sun or tolerate part shade. It grows 3-4 feet and can be used for beds or borders and makes an excellent cut flower.
Adapting to a wide variety of growing conditions and requiring low maintenance is the orange-apricot floribunda ‘Living Easy’. It grows to 4-6 feet and begins forming big double clusters of 3” blooms in the early summer and blooms repeatedly throughout the season. These long lasting blooms have a fruity scent and display all shades of orange from pale peach to burnt orange. It can be mass planted in the border whether in full sun or part shade and is resistant to black spot and mildew. It blooms on new wood so prune early to promote new
growth. It is described as ‘radiant and carefree’ and lives up to its name.
The unique color of ‘Hot Cocoa’ is difficult to describe. It is a smoky chocolate orange that prefers cooler temperatures to keep the browner tones, whereas hot weather brings on the reddish orange colors. This floribunda forms a 5 foot bush and emits a sweet fragrance. This award winner rose is packed with spectacular 3 -4” ruffled petals flowers that begin as exquisite rust colored buds. This rose is long blooming, very vigorous and resistant to disease. Definitely a show stopper and conversation piece.
‘Granada’ is the classic tea-shaped rose. The bush grows 4-6 feet and has perfect 4-5” blooms of very fragrant, double rose-pink flowers blended with lemon-yellow red, gold, peach and apricot. It is stunning and a must see. You can grow it in full sun but it is shade tolerant. It makes a sensational cut flower.
The award winning floribunda ‘Intrigue’ has a wonderful growth habit and yields symmetrical blooms of rich mauve purple. This unique colored rose starts out as warm red with cool blue tones and opens into royal plum-purple double clustered blooms with a heady citrus-rose fragrance. This repeat bloomer grows 4 feet tall and requires full sunlight.
Bred in France, ‘Elle’ is an award winning hybrid tea rose in shell pink with gold-orange undertones. It has an intense spicy citrus fragrance. The stunning high-centered buds open to extra doubled full flowers. They hold their blooms well and make excellent long stems bouquets. This small 2-3 foot rose is great for small
gardens and large containers and is resistant to mildew and black spot.
These are some of our roses. Most roses prefer full sun and good air circulation. It is difficult to prevent black spot and powdery mildew in our climate, especially if we have a wet Spring/Summer. Try to keep the leaves as free of water as possible and water in the morning to give any excess water time to dry during the day.
Roses are heavy feeders so make sure you give them well composted soil, manure and rose food at least once a month while it is growing.
Learning to look after your rose may seem like a bit of work at first, but the rewards are well worth it. Their ethereal beauty and heavenly fragrance are sensational.
Happy Gardening.
