Spring is such a gorgeous time of year with colorful blooms popping out all over the garden. It always begins with the small brave white Galanthus (Snowdrop) daring to face the cold weather followed by tiny bouquets of yellow, purple and white Crocuses. Then, masses of deep blue Muscari (Grape Hyacinths) emerge along with the true Hyacinths. These flowers may be small at 6-8” but they have a heady fragrance and new intense colors such as the blue ‘Peter Stuyvesant’, the pure white ‘Carnegie’ and the deep magenta of ‘Woodstock’. All these low growing plants form a carpet of color getting ready to announce the main attraction; the real showstoppers this year which are the Tulips and Narcissus. Some sensational Tulip
varieties are the deep red ‘Lasting Love’, the delicate pink ‘Lingerie’, the sophisticated white ‘Exotic Emperor’, the two toned and lovely fragrant ‘Princess Irene’, the gorgeous ‘Orange Angelique’, the dramatic fringed ‘Black Jewel’ and the novelty ‘Ice cream’. They really are lovely and yes we have them in pots and safe from the deer. If you have deer, they will eat tulips but you are safe with Narcissus. Narcissi
(Daffodils) will come back true every year, will naturalize in the garden and have a whole new look. The
fragrant white ‘Thalia’ is definitely a must in the garden and at only 8-10” she is small enough to be tucked in containers by the door and faithfully give you a delicate scent all Spring. But what is really astounding are the new varieties: the exquisite pink and white ‘Delnashaugh’, the yellow and white lemon scented ‘Pipit’, the ruffled two toned ‘Vanilla Peach’, the bold ‘Golden Ducat’, the fully doubled yellow and white ‘ Irene
Copeland’, the crisp white and pink ‘ Fidelity’, and extremely doubled ‘ Full House’. They all are incredibly beautiful and deer resistant, drought tolerate and will multiply quite easily in your garden year after year.
There are other Spring flowers that are just as beautiful but in a subtle way and hence lesser known. Great for the woodland setting, by a pond or in a container try the beautiful Leucojum ‘Graveteye Giant’ which is 24” high with delicate nodding heads of green and white or the frilly leafed multi colored Anemone St. Brigids and Anemone ‘ de Caen’ (Blue Poppy). The subtle Chionondoxus are darling little plants that come in the white ‘Alba’ and the blue ‘Forbesii’ These little beauties are only 6 “ high and can be grown in the garden or throughout your lawn.
But perhaps the Queen of bulbs is the Amaryllis. Often thought of as a Christmas Flower because of the marketing, these beauties will bloom two or three times a year. Protect them from frost and cold weather by bringing them inside for the Winter and they will multiply year after year. The single flowers have always been stunning but the new doubles are breathtaking. They are featured throughout our showroom and make a spectacular display. Surrounded with so much color in the garden, how can you not be excited about Spring. Happy Gardening.
